About Us

Metro Area Governors Island Coalition (M.A.G.I.C.) was co-founded in November 2020 by long time Governors Island devotees and lower Manhattan residents Roger Manning and Allie Ryan.

In light of the controversial East Side Coastal Resiliency Project ULURP and the impeding demolition of East River Park as well as Brooklyn Botanical Gardens battle with developers and numerous other rezoning struggles around NYC (now united in the “Citywide People’s Land Use Alliance”), Roger and Allie joined forces with other environmental activist leaders and groups around the city including East River Action, LUNGS, HumanScaleNYC, Green Map, Time’s Up!, Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space and the Lenape Nation as well as the Community Declaration on the Future of New York — to preserve the incredibly unique green open space quality of Governors Island used by over one million New Yorkers residing in 99% of NYC’s zip codes annually according to the Trust for Governors Island.

Our mission:

  • To promote increased public awareness of and involvement in the currently less-than-transparent process of determining the future of Governors Island.
  • To oppose the rezoning currently proposed by The Trust for Governors Island (filed Autumn 2020).
  • To research and aid in clarifying the realities of proposed plans for GI.
  • To assist in coming up with possible solutions to fulfill the needs of GI while preserving its uniquely welcoming openness and expansive parklands quality.
