We the undersigned join with Metro Area Governors Island Coalition (M.A.G.I.C.) in the following statement regarding the future of Governors Island which belongs to all New Yorkers:
– We want to retain the incredibly unique green open space quality of Governors Island and support more public amenities such as for the arts, athletic activities, playgrounds, waterfront access, urban farming, environmental projects, “wild” less-formal spaces, and a bandshell. We also support the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School community’s requests for a pool, a gymnatorium and expansion into the neighboring former hospital building.
– We support the Trust For Governors Island hosting new master planning workshops where the community can present ideas as opposed to the current top-down planning approach.
– We support more work being done to explore funding approaches that don’t essentially privatize large areas of the island with harmful high-rise high-density development such as The Trust is currently proposing. The current rezoning application should be withdrawn.
– New building on Governors Island should be kept to minimum and not exceed the four story height of buildings in the historic district or the 35-foot height limit in the current zoning.
– Governors Island is already productive as a climate hub, thanks to the work of Earth Matter, GrowNYC, Billion Oyster Project, Audubon Society, the Harbor School and others.
– Land Use public hearings being held virtually due to Covid are too difficult to participate in and should be suspended.
