Metro Area Governors Island Coalition (M.A.G.I.C.) was co-founded in November 2020 by long time Governors Island devotees and lower Manhattan residents Roger Manning and Allie Ryan to advocate for maintaining the incredibly unique green open space quality of Governors Island, used by nearly a million New Yorkers each year. Through advocacy and legal action with a broad coalition of environmental and civic leaders and groups, M.A.G.I.C. has worked to oppose plans that will compromise the irreplaceable historic character and undermine the evolution of Governors Island as a unique natural and built environment, a green urban refuge for people and wildlife – a public space meant for the enjoyment of all. Actions the group has taken include fighting the 2021 rezoning, testifying regularly on proposed changes within the historic district, and speaking out against overdevelopment and privatization of much of the island. The Coalition has also created an alternative visualization of what could be possible on the southern portion of the island that avoids high rise, high density Manhattanization of that unique open space.
